Jason Cantoro was born and lives in Montreal, Canada. He studied Visual Arts at the University of Québec in Montreal. His work has been presented in more than 30 art fairs and group exhibitions in Canada and the U.S. since 2004.
In 2004, he co-founded with Alice Jarry the artprint studio CINQUNQUATRE. Jason mixes photography, drawings and painting by using silkscreen printing.
He studies the particularities of the different printing techniques in order to explore the strengths and limits of the different mediums. The aesthetic element of his work is based on the principle that every medium or technique used should be represented for its own particular criteria. He believes it is important to leave a considerable role to randomness when creating compositions and mixing images. It gives an impression that the images have aged on their own and creates a classical/objective perspective of the subject itself. His intention is to mix pop culture, historical, urban imagery and personal matters in order to define his experience as an individual, but also to express the similarities between individuals of different backgrounds.
In 2008 he received a grant from the Art Council of Quebec for research and creation. He has created large scale murals in the streets of Montreal where it is legal to do postering. He has documented the process and made short animation films. His intention was to take it out of the Gallery and offer it in a neutral space, such as the street and internet.
In 2008, the studio heired à manual Litho press, that was once the press of Mr. Albert Dumouchel, a prestigious artist in etching and printmaking in Quebec during the 20th century, and a prominent actor in the transmission and exploration of artprinting techniques. The CINQUNQUATRE studio is now in in the process of making space for this "new" printing technique.
